Laneast Working Weekend |
The day dawned bright shining on the caravans which had arrived on Friday at Martin Orchards farm at Laneast near Launceston and to welcome the many more who turned up on Saturday for the ploughing match. The tractors started at about 8am, with the drivers warming them up ready for the days events. |
The Men and the Ladies had a couple of practice bouts before joining the main field for some serious work. The Stationary engines started their classic pop popping, all in a line at the side of the field, and the stallholders set out their wares and were ready for selling. And of course Gwen, Jean and Ann had their raffle table set up ready to sell us all tickets. |
The ploughing went very well with 52 entrants in all. Everybody worked diligently throughout the day, only stopping occasionally for tea and sustenance which was ably supplied by The Silver Chef. At the end of the day we had a very happy bunch of judges and drivers. |
Sunday dawned, not as bright as Saturday, but dry at least. A little later start today with it being Sunday, but once one tractor moved they all followed ! It was more of a fun ploughing day, just filling in the spaces left from the match on Saturday. |
Their were 4 pairs of horses ploughing today and plenty to see and do for all the family. Once again the Ladies were organising the raffle and sorting out the results of the horse ploughing and stationary engine competitions, the results of which are set out below. |
Entertainment in the marquee in the evening was supplied by the Sound of Nevada karaoke, with everybody "helping out" with the singing and enjoying themselves. |
Bank Holiday Monday was a day of tying up loose ends, finishing off turning the fields, loading up and bracing themselves ready to return to normal life on Tuesday after a fantastic ploughing and social weekend. Once again, many thanks to the Orchard Family for the use of their fields for another year and their hospitality and to all those who organised such a great event.
